Having spent months in our study of Matthew, working to understand the revolution to which Jesus calls us, we pause during the season of Advent, to nurture our personal and collective intimacy with him.

For the Jesus who is re-establishing God’s kingship on earth, and leading his disciples in the missionary outpouring of truth, justice, healing and compassion does so because God is love. That is to say, the Christian call to action is indeed at the heart of Jesus’s message. But the “what” of that action is rooted in the “why.” God has undertaken the entire project of salvation because God cares endlessly about…us.

And, as is the intent of Advent, we set aside these weeks to remember the God who desires to make their home with us – to call us home from afar, as well as to bring home into our age of sin and suffering. In Advent we prepare to meet God face to face and we reflect on the incomprehensible truth that God’s face is one of humility and grace.
